Black Myth: Wukong Review 2025

Hey you guys Leos back in the game coming straight from LA where palm trees dance and graphics cards are in full swing…

Ive just wrapped my eyes around the Black Myth Wukong game..

And let me tell you its an exciting journey through the mysterious East with combat systems that let players throwing their controllers at one point and feeling like a master of kung fu in the next…

Its not just another game. Its an adventure and Im here to discuss the value of your hard earned cheddar..

First Impressions Lookin Good But Not Always

When I first started up Black Myth Wukong I was confronted with images that were absolutely explosive…

Certain areas are stunning with animations and designs for characters that are top of the line…

However not all of it is Gucci. I noticed that some textures looked somewhat like they didnt understand the new generation of glow up…

However the overall design is powerful and draws the player into its world through a the distinct blend of realism with imagination.

As a player who has seen all kinds of 8 bit sprites from reflections with ray tracing I appreciate the effort even though it isnt always able to stick the ground…

Is it a Souls Like? Lets Set the Record Straight

The most popular question people ask is is the Black Myth Wukong Souls Like?

The answer is a bit ambiguous. On the one hand you have Bonfires (shrines in this instance) the XP grind and the healing items with limited usage which respawn enemies after you take a break.

Youll definitely be dragged and trying to maintain your endurance like your life is on the line.

Be sure to be prepared for some boss fights are going to make you sweat like trying to locate parking in the downtown area of LA on the evening of a Friday…

However The Black Myth Wukong isnt just an identical copy of From Softwares formula…

There are more levels and theres only one weapon the staff.

Ive spent hours in Souls. Souls games learning enemy patterns and mastering different types of builds.

I can tell the player that Black Myth Wukong has its distinct style.

If you dont like this Souls style game prepare for a shock…

Combat When It Clicks It Slaps

The fight scenes of Black Myth Wukong is where the game shines and sometimes flashes…

When everything is in sync its like a perfectly choreographed fighting scene from an old John Woo movie.

Youre dodging attacks in the last minute launching powerful blows to disrupt the enemys moves securing them by using spells and then dropping an energy bomb for the final blow.

Its smooth stylish and when you take it off you will be oh so satisfied…

However heres the thing combat may feel button smashy.

When you are fighting bosses with more tanky weapons you may find yourself pressing the attack button and hoping for the most effective.

In some cases the game does not detect your inputs and this can be frustrating for the controller throw. in player.

Ive played enough action games to know when controls arent as tight as well.

Black Myth Wukong sometimes feels like its fighting me.

Magic and Spirits Spice Up or Break the Immersion?

To stop the fight from getting boring Black Myth Wukong throws in spirits and spells.

The spells are a blast letting the enemies freeze causing replicas and transform into various creatures with their own sets of moves.

The spirits? Imagine it as Pokemon however instead of catching them all youre collecting em to unleash a devastating attack…

The issue is that flashy moves could result in the game slow down…

Im talking about frame drops that could mess up your timing and even get you killed…

The bumper buttons may also not be responsive..

Im speculating out my character and it happens that technical problems stop the process.

Story Time Journey to the West…Kinda

The Storywise Black Myth Wukong is based on the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West.

I was hoping for an indepth look into Wukongs mythology but honestly the plot is a bit boring.

The story is a jumble of levels level meeting characters from the book but the dialogue can be a bit unnatural and the overall story is somewhat disconnected.

The game has a great visuals. There are odd characters and scenes that are enjoyable to watch.

I am glad that the developers did not hesitate to be a bit crazy and wacky but I wish they had put as much effort into the story as they did the visuals…

Level Design A Slow Burn

The design of the levels that is used in Black Myth Wukong is a mixed mix.

The beginning chapters are boring with no walls and little exploration. Later chapters are larger and more engaging.

The game doesnt hold the map in your hands as there are no maps and no goal markers.

You have to engage your inner explorer and uncover hidden pathways and secret retailers…

Technical Issues Not Always But Often Enough

Lets talk about technical glitches. I have already discussed the stutters that occur when using spirits.

However I also experienced audio glitches in which the voices would change to Chinese or cut out completely.

These were not game breaking issues however they definitely ruined immersion.

Final Call Is Black Myth Wukong Worth the Hype?

So after 30 hours of playing is it worthwhile time as well as your money?

It depends. If youre a Souls Like player looking to take on a brand new adventure youll likely enjoy the game.

The gameplay can be enthralling the graphics are stunning and theres plenty of extra content to keep you entertained.

However if you arent a fan of this genre or are expecting something similar to God of War or Devil May Cry you may be disappointed.

The plot is weak and the battles can become repetitive and the technical problems could be a bit annoying.

Black Myth Wukong is like the taco truck with a trendy design that everybody has been talking about.

Its got seriously delicious tacos however the wait isnt always pleasant and occasionally theyre out of your preferred salsa.

Its worth a visit but dont expect perfection.
