Split Fiction Review This Coop Game Slaps

By Leo

What up yall? Its Leo your local gamer guru from the sunny streets of Los Angeles . Been slingin reviews and bringin digital worlds to life for a hot minute.

You can catch me vibin over at 3215 Overland Ave Los Angeles California(CA) 90034. Trust me when it comes to killer games I know whats good.

Hazelight Keeps Droppin Fire Coop Experiences

When you talk coop games Hazelight Studios is straightup the kings no cap.

These guys the masterminds behind bangers like A Way Out and It Takes Two dont just tack on coop as an afterthought.

Nah they build their whole games around playin with a buddy which unlocks these super unique and fresh experiences you just cant find solo.

Their newest joint Split Fiction keeps that streak alive droppin another thrilling adventure thats easily gonna be remembered as one of the best coop games ever made.

It Takes Two set the bar crazy high after snagging Game of the Year but Split Fiction straightup meets it if not totally schools it.

Story? Eh Gameplays Where Its At

So the game throws you into the lives of Zoe and Mio two authors who are kinda strugglin ya know?. They sign up to be guinea pigs for this wild machine cooked up by Rader Publishing.

This machine lets them dive deep into their own book ideas as fully immersive experiences.

But things get real sideways real quick and Mio and Zoe end up stuck in these glitchy mashedup versions of their stories.

Theyre constantly jumpin between Mios dark scifi adventures and Zoes magical fantasy realms.

Look lets be real the story in It Takes Two wasnt its strongest suit and honestly the plot in Split Fiction aint gonna blow your mind either.

Its kinda predictable and Zoe and Mio have some moments thatll make you roll your eyes a bit.

However the actors crush it with their voice work and some of the emotional beats actually hit home even if you see em comin from a mile away.

But no ones pickin up Split Fiction for some deep narrative anyway.

This is Peak Coop Gaming No Doubt

Just like It Takes Two the gameplay is the absolute star of the show.

The game constantly throws you into one mind blowing mechanic after another. Seriously itd be a crime to spill any of these surprises but trust the stuff you saw in the trailers  like raisin dragons from eggs and morphin into pigs  is just the tip of the iceberg.

Hazelight keeps the surprises comin and just like in It Takes Two these gameplay ideas rarely overstay their welcome.

They squeeze every last drop of fun out of each Split Fiction gameplay concept and then bam Theyre onto the next crazy thing.

Its a rapidfire barrage of genius for most of the games runtime and even when some ideas dont totally stick the awesome ones way outweigh the misses.

SciFi vs. Fantasy Both Worlds Pop Off

The early chapters have a few weaker spots mostly in the action and platforming scifi sequences.

Since there arent really any big consequences for dying these early bits while lookin slick and feelin exciting kinda lack that oomph.

Its like all flash and no substance in those initial moments.

But hold up As the gameplay gets more intricate and requires you to actually use your brain the game gets way more engaging.

And while some of the scifi vibes were hit or miss for me personally the fantasy levels are straightup fantastic from the jump.

Mios scifi worlds bring this distinct cyberpunk aesthetic with intense music that gets your adrenaline pumpin.

On the flip side Zoes gorgeous fantasy lands boast an epic score that makes you think of Lord of the Rings and the Harry Potter flicks.

Whether youre in the cyberpunk streets or a magical forest Split Fiction is fundamentally a puzzle platformer with teamwork being key to takin down almost every challenge.

But dont box this game into just one genre. Its mostly a platformer but it also throws in isometric action thirdperson shooting and even some jet skiing action.

This constant mixup keeps things fresh and never gets boring.

Side Stories? More Like Stealin the Show

Split Fiction spends a good chunk of time in each main scifi and fantasy world. But it keeps things from gettin stale by breakin up the main stages with these special side stories.

These let you dip your toes back into the opposite genre. So while youre deep in Mios scifi chapter you might stumble upon bonus stages that switch to Zoes fantasy world and vice versa.

Some of these side stories are mind blowingly creative and a few even helped create what I can confidently say are some of my alltime favorite coop gaming memories.

Most of Split Fictions side stories are straightup incredible and you absolutely gotta seek em all out.

These side stories let Hazelight really flex their creative muscles in ways the main chapters dont always allow.

They can totally think outside the box when it comes to gameplay mechanics and art styles. The game still looks amazing even when its not goin wild with different art styles though.

And get this it runs at a silky smooth 60 frames per second on console.

Considering how much action is poppin off on screen at any given moment in Split Fiction the fact that it can maintain split screen at this level with absolutely zero performance issues is one of the most impressive things Ive ever seen in a coop game.

Twelve Hours of Awesome Plus Secrets to Find

It took around 12 hours to see the credits roll on Split Fiction. But theres still a bunch of secrets and Easter eggs hidden away if youre lookin to hit that 100% completion mark.

Now heres the thing you gotta have a coop partner to fully experience and appreciate Split Fiction. Theres no solo mode plain and simple.

But Hazelight and EA have made it easier than ever to find someone to play with. Split Fiction supports both local splitscreen coop and online play.

And the best part? Only one person needs to own the game thanks to the Friends Pass which is back from It Takes Two.

This time around the Friends Pass is even crossplay which is a massive upgrade. Now you aint gotta worry about your friends being on a different platform.

Crossplay works just as smooth as couch coop with zero hiccups during my playtime.

Final Verdict You Gotta Play This

As someone whos sunk countless hours into video games sometimes it feels like Ive seen it all. But Split Fiction literally made my jaw drop with how blown away I was.

This game surprises delights shocks and endlessly entertains. Split Fiction is easily one of the best coop games ever created and every gamer needs to experience this.

Josef Fares and his crew at Hazelight are on a serious winning streak and Split Fiction is definitely gonna be in the running for Game of the Year nominations come award season.
